Welcoming Message

4th European Congress of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, Head and Neck Surgery

Dear colleagues and friends,

On behalf of EUFOS & the German Society of ORL HNS it is our privilege to welcome you to Berlin for the 4th European Congress of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, Head and Neck Surgery. After the excellent meetings in Paris (1988), Sorrento / Napoli (1992) and Budapest (1996) the Berlin meeting will be a state of the art conference of our great specialty which is occurring at the turn of the millennium, about 100 years after the foundation of oto-rhino-laryngology in most European countries.

Berlin is a living symbol of European integration and, as such, it is a perfect location for this congress. We are glad that colleagues from all over Europe and indeed, the World, will meet, share ideas and forge closer links with each other.

The theme of the 4th European Congress is "Past-Present-Future". There will be many contributions on the history of our field from ancient times and from different countries. This conference will be an appropriate way of celebrating the momentous changes that have occurred in all subspecialities. Finally, future developments will be featured and evaluated.

In the morning, 8 parallel instructional courses will take place and anatomical surgical demonstrations are planned for the early afternoon (rhinoplasty, sinus surgery, and skull base surgery). These demonstrations will be given by leading experts and will include 3D navigation, thereby achieving the highest standards in post graduate training exercises.

Keynote lectures will be given each morning during the main sessions (more than 90). Panel discussions from 15 subspecialties, free paper sessions, poster sessions and a video session should make it difficult for everyone to choose his/her preferred topics. In addition there will be a panel on training and continuous education in oto-rhino-laryngology in Europe. Major efforts have been made to incorporate basic research sessions in all of our subspecialties.

One day training courses in rhinoplasty, neck dissection techniques, laser surgery and plastic surgery will take place immediately before and after the congress.

More than 1.500 abstracts are published in a citable supplement of Laryngo-Rhino-Otology, an official journal of the German society. There will be a permanent poster session which will provide sufficient time and opportunity to discuss the results with an international audience.

A further highlight of the conference will be a comprehensive exhibition of the new technological developments in our field.

Berlin is undergoing dramatic changes at the moment and it offers a very attractive cultural scene. We will entertain our guests with a music programme in the Berlin Philharmonic Hall on Monday night, 15th May. Additionally reservations are made for three different operas "Faust", "The Magic Flute" and "The Flying Dutchman". On Wednesday afternoon a boat cruise to Potsdam will be a further highlight of the social programme, followed by an informal dinner. Ten years post Germany's re-unification, the EUFOS 2000 meeting in Berlin should provide an outstanding example of positive European co-operation. The ultimate success of the congress will be determined by your active participation and your engagement.

Welcome to the new Berlin!
